PFAS, Our Forever Poisons

PFAS are forever chemicals found in many everyday items, including Teflon which can be found in non-stick pans. These perennial pollutants; are carcinogenic and contaminate the air, drinking water and human organisms around the world. This film is a story between Europe and the US highlighting the scale of this disaster and the emergency for collective European action against this global threat.

July 2, 1964. After a struggle that shaped the life of Reverend Martin Luther King, President Lyndon B. Johnson—and then Congress—finally bring racial segregation to an end by passing the Civil Rights Act.
A historic breakthrough—at least, on the surface… 

Because Martin Luther King knows the reality is very different. Even if racial justice seems to have advanced—at least on paper—inequalities remain plainly visible. Housing, unemployment: socio-economic hardship continues to eat away at the country’s working-class neighborhoods. Martin Luther King has always been convinced that without social justice, there can be no equality. This is the beginning of his new fight.

SEEKING FOR GERDA TARO

At a time when photojournalism was being invented, Gerda Taro photographed the tragedy of the Spanish Civil War. She created a pioneering body of work—before losing her life on the eve of her 27th birthday.

From Hitler’s Germany to the desperate battles of the Spanish Republic, via the bohemian Paris of the interwar years, her short life spanned the great sweep of history in the first half of the twentieth century.

Her photographs capture the madness of men, the pain of war, but also an ideal of fraternity and the hope of a better world. Her name, long erased from collective memory, has recently resurfaced from the shadows of oblivion…

DARAYA, A LIBRARY UNDER BOMBS

“Daraya, a Library Under Bombs” tells the extraordinary story of a group of friends from Daraya, a Syrian town besieged by the Damascus regime from 2012 onwards. During the siege, they were 20 years old and set out to build a library from books salvaged from the ruins and from buildings abandoned by residents who had fled—while bombs rained down on the city, month after month. A resistance through books, which they filmed and documented, alongside other scenes that tell a story of friendship, democratic ideals, and a discovery of culture.

Now separated after the fall of the city—some living as refugees in Turkey—these friends are trying by every means to reunite, to keep that adventure alive, and to carry on that ideal.

Quelques heures par mois, une dizaine de femmes se retrouvent dans un centre social de la banlieue de Lens, pour se maquiller, se prodiguer des soins les unes aux autres, être ensemble, se raconter les soucis, rire de tout et de n’importe quoi. C’est l’Atelier ‘Estime de soi’.

Dominique, une « esthéticienne du social » épaule ces femmes qui pensent avoir perdu la face. Telle une bonne fée, penchée un temps sur leurs destins, elle aide à libérer la parole, à choisir les thèmes de discussions, les couleurs des maquillages…

Au fil des mois, le regard change sur soi-même et sur les autres. L’espoir et la vie émergent, à nouveau.

« INSTINCTS PRIMAIRES : coulisses d’une élection » dévoile les tractations, les manœuvres et les trahisons au cœur d’une famille politique.

La famille de la droite française, encore marquée par ses déchirements, lancée dans une épreuve inédite, celle des primaires ! Le film propose une plongée exclusive aux côtés des organisateurs du vote, des candidats et de leurs stratèges. On y découvre comment la primaire a été imposée à Nicolas Sarkozy, revenu aux commandes du parti… Comment, malgré une longue tradition de la culture du chef, Les Républicains ont réussi cet exercice démocratique. Comment la question des bureaux de vote, clé de ce scrutin, a donné lieu à une passionnante partie d’échecs pleine de méfiance. Comment on a tenté d’éliminer purement et simplement certains candidats. Ou encore, comment les deux favoris supposés de cette complétion ont été aveuglés par leur duel annoncé…

Trente-et-un parachutistes français sont projetés dans la mitraille et le chaos pendant plus de vingt heures de combat, dans une zone à découvert, opposés à des Talibans lourdement équipés et cinq fois plus nombreux qu’eux. L’héroïsme, le sacrifice, le sang. Neuf morts, seize blessés et seulement six soldats indemnes. Presque tous issus du régiment de parachutistes de Castres : le 8ème RPIMA. Tous copains. Jeunes, pour la plupart.

LES STRATÈGES

En imaginant « Les Stratèges », les auteurs ont fait un pari, celui de proposer une histoire secrète de l’élection présidentielle française de 2012. Une histoire véritablement politique, celle des stratégies, des reniements, des calculs. Celle des « doutes » éprouvés par les candidats, des manœuvres tactiques imaginées par leurs conseillers, mais aussi celle de leurs convictions et de leurs idéaux. Une histoire qui ne serait pas seulement une chronique de campagne mais qui serait un récit de science politique ou d’« Histoire immédiate ». Le film adopte les codes visuels du thriller politique et repose sur la parole d’acteurs majeurs de l’élection, tournés dans les lieux de pouvoir.

LA VIE AMOUREUSE DES PRÊTRES

La règle du célibat obligatoire des prêtres dans l’Eglise catholique romaine est régulièrement contestée : on l’accuse de favoriser les comportements sexuels déviants dans le clergé, d’accélérer la chute des vocations, de signer le décalage entre l’Eglise et la société moderne.

Dans « La vie amoureuse des prêtres », le réalisateur David André, raconte l’histoire croisée de trois prêtres : Kilien, jeune prêtre filmé pendant sa liaison cachée avec une femme, fait son « coming out » et dit adieu à ses paroissiens ; Gabriel, qui vient tout juste d’être exclu de l’Eglise, se marie enfin avec sa compagne, après 40 ans de liaison cachée. A l’inverse Sébastien, un jeune séminariste, s’engage au célibat et est ordonné dans la cathédrale d’Orléans : nommé dans la Beauce, il découvre l’isolement des prêtres aujourd’hui.

Au delà des trajectoires humaine, le film propose une réflexion sur la solitude des prêtres en France, sur leur décalage avec une société de plus en plus individualiste et érotisée et sur les valeurs défendues aujourd’hui par l’Eglise.

CARTON ROUGE AU MAL LOGEMENT

Au bout d’un couloir d’immeuble d’apparence anodine, une porte d’appartement s’ouvre. Eric Cantona nous accueille et s’adresse à nous d’un ton décidé. Dans la peau d’un agent immobilier, il s’apprête à nous faire visiter un bien. « D’abord le couloir, suivez-moi… » Nous lui emboîtons le pas, il a l’air grave, brusque, presque autoritaire.

Ce film réalisé pour la Fondation Abbé Pierre se distingue des spots publicitaires habituels. Ici, il ne s’agit pas de vendre un produit, mais de sensibiliser les spectateurs à la situation du logement en France et au combat que mène la Fondation Abbé Pierre. Il ne s’agit donc ni d’une opération de séduction, ni de la création d’un désir de consommation, mais d’une interpellation dont la puissance repose sur le charisme et la faculté d’empathie d’Eric Cantona d’une part, et l’identification du spectateur à la situation d’autre part : « et si on me proposait d’habiter là ? ».

SUICIDISTAN

Oregon, au Nord-Ouest des Etats-Unis. De nombreux « vétérans » d’Irak ou d’Afghanistan ont tenté de mettre fin à leurs jours. Aujourd’hui « encadrés » dès leur retour par un dispositif médical et d’aide psychologique massif, ces soldats sont devenus le symptôme d’un mal américain. Avec un budget de plus de 50 milliards de dollars spécialement destiné à l’aide et aux soins psychologiques, le Department of Veterans Affairs tente de renverser une tendance qui a fait passer le taux de suicide dans l’armée devant celui de la population civile. Ce film part à la rencontre de ces soldats en dépression. Il montre aussi combien ce phénomène est désormais pris au sérieux par le gouvernement américain dans le cadre de nombreux programmes destinés à endiguer le suicide des soldats de retour du théâtre des opérations.

Baptiste, parisien trentenaire, emmène sa femme Carole à la campagne chez un couple d’amis, Jean-Phi et Nathalie, qu’il n’a pas vus depuis 6 ans. Le temps a passé, et les souvenirs communs cachent difficilement des choix de vie divergents. Les amis se cherchent, se forcent, jouent, chantent, font semblant, jusqu’à un incident ravageur qui met un terme brutal aux illusions des uns et des autres.

GUJARAT, L’ÉGLISE DES PARIAS

Au 1er siècle après Jésus Christ, Saint Thomas l’Apôtre aurait atteint le sud de l’Inde pour y « propager la Bonne Nouvelle ». Deux mille ans après, l’Église catholique Indienne est forte d’une communauté de 15 millions de croyants. Si elle ne représente que 1,5% de la population du pays, elle est très visible grâce à la force de ses écoles où se précipite l’élite de la société, qu’elle soit chrétienne, musulmane ou hindoue.

Dans le sud du pays la présence catholique est ancienne et bien établie. L’histoire est différente dans les États du Nord de l’Inde particulièrement au Gujarat où Narendra Modi fut le gouverneur. Dans cet état de l’ouest de l’Inde, la présence de l’Église catholique – et ses 150.000 membres – est plus récente.

Comment est-elle parvenue à traverser les siècles et à surmonter les revers de l’histoire ? Quel héritage les premiers missionnaires ont-ils légué à leurs successeurs ? Quel rôle s’assignent aujourd’hui, dans notre monde globalisé, les Missions Étrangères de Paris ? Que signifie la vocation de missionnaire ? Comment le sens des missions a-t-il évolué au cours des siècles ?
